Your chance of getting high blood pressure is also greater if you're older or an African American. But again, you can take steps to avoid high blood pressure, including proper diet, no smoking and getting the right exercise.
  2. Although our risk of having high blood pressure increases with age, this isn't just a problem of aging. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says about 25 percent of Americans under age 45 have high blood pressure.
  3. High blood pressure cannot be "cured." But it can be treated and controlled, often by losing excess weight, avoiding excess alcohol, and sometimes through medication. Talk with your doctor.
