    • Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
    • Sudden dimness or loss of vision, especially in just one eye
    • Sudden severe headache with no apparent cause
    • Loss of speech, problems talking or understanding speech
    • Unexplained dizziness or falls
  2. There are a number of risk factors for stroke. The National Institute on Aging says men are at a higher risk than women; African Americans also face a higher risk; and our risk increases as we get older. Other risk factors include high blood pressure, personal and family history, smoking, atrial fibrillation, and certain congenital heart defects.
  3. If you suspect a stroke, call 911. The sooner the patient can be evaluated and receive treatment, the better.
