Your chance of getting high blood pressure is also greater if you're older or an African American. But again, you can take steps to avoid high blood pressure, including proper diet, no smoking and getting the right exercise.
- Although our risk of having high blood pressure increases with age, this isn't just a problem of aging. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says about 15 percent of those ages 18-39 are among the 50 million Americans who have high blood pressure.
- High blood pressure can NOT be "cured." But it can be treated and controlled, often by losing excess weight, avoiding excess alcohol, and sometimes through medication. Talk with your doctor.
